Skolithos.

Skolithos (formerly spelt Scolithus or Skolithus) is a common trace fossil ichnogenus whose original form consisted of approximately vertical cylinders. One well-known occurrence of Cambrian trace fossils is the famous 'Pipe Rock' of northwest Scotland. The 'pipes' that give the rock its name are closely packed straight tubes, which in this case were presumably made by a worm-like organism.

The presence of Lingulapholis suggests that the Parnaíba Basin was inserted in the zone of diffuse faunal mixing ...Small incipient Skolithos offshoots (1-2 cm in length) were typical of insect larvae brooding areas, while adult insects created incipient Skolithos and Polykladichnus traces (Fig. 5D, F, G). Beetles commonly created slightly wider and deeper penetrating incipient Psilonichnus burrows, usually 5 cm or more in length and up to 1 cm in diameter. The tidalite is notable for the presence of a striking crowded Skolithos ichnofabric on both bedding planes and in vertical section. Bedding plane expressions of the ichnofabric reveal true substrates of sand piles excavated during burrow construction, in addition to an apparently remarkable equal spacing between individual burrows that is ...(D) Skolithos burrowed sandstones from the Erwin Formation, Rt 501, Glasgow, VA. Low number of opportunistic (facies crossing) elements of the Skolithos ichnofacies was observed. The paucity of bioturbation in the HCS sandstone beds in the delta front is most likely a consequence of high frequency and/or high intensity episodic erosional amalgamation and deposition associated with storms. The dominant trace-fossil assemblages are Skolithos, mixed Skolithos-Cruziana or proximal Cruziana ichnofacies (Fig. 5).
